How to Play Live Blackjack

Live Blackjack works in exactly the same way as any other Blackjack game so if you have played before then you’ll pick it up in no time at all. If you are new to Blackjack then don’t worry, as the game is very simple and takes hardly any time to learn.

The game is played with eight decks of card shuffled into the shoe. The aim of the game is simply to build a hand of cards that is as close to 21 in value as possible, but without exceeding 21, which is called going bust. At the end of a round, if your hand is closer to 21 than the dealer’s is then you have won.

The card values are very easy to remember. The number cards (2 through 10) are worth their face values, the face cards (Jack, Queen and King) are all worth 10, and Aces are worth 1 or 11. This means that it is possible to create 21 with just two cards, an Ace and a ten card. That hand is called Blackjack and it is the strongest possible hand, meaning it will always beat all other hands, including those that are worth 21 but comprised of more than two cards.

After all the players have placed their bets at the start of a round, each player receives two face-up cards and the dealer receives one face-up card and one face-down card. When it comes to your turn to play you will be presented with three basic options, Stand, Hit and Double. If you choose to Hit then you are dealt an additional card to the hand, as long as this doesn’t send you bust you will then have the same options again. If you choose Stand then the hand remains as it is and play moves on to the next player. If you choose Double, your bet will be doubled, you will receive one more card to the hand, and then play moves on.

There are some situations when you will have more options than Hit, Stand and Double. If your first two cards have the same value, such as two 8s, then you can split them into two separate hands. This will double your bet, but it gives you another chance to beat the dealer.

You can take out insurance against the dealer having Blackjack if the dealer’s visible card is an Ace. Insurance costs half of your original bet and if the dealer does have Blackjack it pays at 2:1 so that you do not lose any money.

The dealer plays after all players have finished playing their hands. The dealer will always draw more cards until the hand is worth at least 16 and will stand as soon as the hand is worth 17 or more.

After the dealer has finished playing, you are paid out if you have a winning hand. All winning hands pay at 1:1, except for Blackjack, which pays out at a more generous 3:2.

Special Features and Side Bets

Many of our Live Blackjack games offer two different side bets that can be extremely lucrative, the Perfect Pairs and the 21+3 bets. The Perfect Pairs side bet is on your first two cards or the dealer’s first two cards forming one of three kinds of pairs, a Perfect Pair, a Coloured Pair or a Red/Black Pair. A Perfect Pair is two identical cards, a Coloured Pair is a pair with the same value and colour, but from different suits, and a Red/Black pair is two cards with the same value but from different suits and colours. The Perfect Pair pays 25:1, the Coloured Pair pays 12:1 and the Red/Black Pair pays 6:1.

The 21+3 side bet wins if your first two cards and the dealer’s visible card form a three-card poker hand. A Suited Three of a Kind pays 100:1, a Straight Flush pays 40:1, Three of a Kind pays 30:1, a Straight pays 10:1 and a Flush pays 5:1.

While each table has seven seats, you can always play thanks to the Bet Behind feature. You can see how well a player is performing and then choose to bet behind them to get in on the action while you wait for a seat to become available.

If you want to speed up the game then you can use the Pre-Decision feature. You can decide whether to Hit, Stand, Double, or Split at the same time as the first player, without waiting for your turn. If all players do this then the games become significantly faster and you can play even more.
